GPs in the UK - GMC GP Registration, Step by Step

About the General Medical Council

GMC helps to protect patients and improve UK medical education and practice by setting standards for students and doctors. They support them in achieving and exceeding those standards and take action when they are not met.

Practicing Medicine in the UK

To practice medicine in the UK you need to hold registration with a license to practice. Holding a license allows you to, for example, prescribe medicine and treat patients. It is a criminal offense in the UK for a doctor to give the impression they hold a registration or a license if they don't.

Getting a Job as a Doctor in the UK

The UK welcomes doctors of all grades and experience. When you apply for a job, employers will check you are appropriately qualified, experienced and can communicate effectively in English.

Apply for registration

There are various ways of applying to join the UK medical register and obtaining a license to practice. The type of application you are eligible to make will depend on your nationality, where you gained your primary medical qualification, and your experience and activities.

The GMC website will help you find the applications you are able to make. When you know which application is right for you, you’ll need to use GMC Online to make your application.

The General Medical Council (GMC) ensures that all registered doctors maintain the high standards the public and the medical profession expect.

Full registration with the GMC along with a license to practice allow a doctor to practice medicine in the UK. To work as a GP in the NHS, a doctor must also obtain GP Registration and be included on the medical NMPL of the country in which they wish to work.

Whichever route is followed, you must:

1. Have the necessary knowledge of English to practice medicine in the UK
2. Provide evidence of your identity and nationality, including attending an identity check at the GMC's UK offices
3. Provide details of all medical and non-medical experience and activities
4. Provide Certificates of Good Standing from every medical regulatory authority you have been registered with during the past five years
5. Complete a set of declarations about your fitness to practice
